What is an IPTV M3U Playlist? Explained Clearly

An M3U playlist is a text file that lists the stream addresses for every channel in your IPTV subscription. When you add an M3U URL to your IPTV player, the player reads this file, displays the channel names, and knows where to go to play each one.

What M3U stands for

M3U originally stood for "MP3 URL" — it was developed as a playlist format for audio files. It was later adopted by IPTV services because it provides a simple, universal way to list multiple media streams.

What an M3U file looks like

An M3U file is plain text. Each channel entry has two parts:

  1. A #EXTINF line — containing the channel name, logo URL and EPG ID
  2. A stream URL — the direct address of the video stream

When you open the M3U URL in your IPTV player, it reads all these entries and presents them as a channel list.

M3U URL vs M3U file

Your IPTV provider will either give you a direct M3U URL (a web address that generates the playlist dynamically) or a downloadable .m3u file. Most modern IPTV players accept both — enter the URL directly in the app's playlist settings.

M3U vs Xtream Codes login

There are two common ways to add an IPTV subscription to a player:

  • M3U URL — a single web address that contains your entire channel list. Simple, works in almost every player.
  • Xtream Codes — a three-part login (server URL, username, password) that allows the player to fetch channels, EPG and VOD separately and more dynamically.

Xtream Codes is generally preferred for modern players like TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro because it provides better VOD integration, Catch Up support and dynamic EPG loading. Your IPTV UK Hub welcome email will include both methods where applicable.

How to add an M3U URL to your player

In most players: go to Add Playlist → M3U URL → paste the URL from your welcome email → save. See our IPTV Smarters Pro guide or TiviMate guide for detailed steps.
